What Does a Breastfeeding Superfood Mama Eat? (3/10/2011)
Joanna Steven - Fri, 03/11/2011 - 10:38
Baby Franklin, 3 months.
Woah! Between taking a double load of classes to finish my Masters early, taking care of baby Franklin, and liquidating Sirova, it's a wonder I have any time to blog anymore! :)
Here's what I ate yesterday:
Breakfast:Mixed berries and spinach smoothie with a banana, Fruits of the Earth and bee pollen.
Cup of Honeybush tea, unsweetened.
Lunch:Raw curried carrot soup with superfoods.Baby greens and corn salad with walnut pate.1 cacao/walnut brownie from Blue Mountain Organics.
Snack:Banana/strawberry protein shake with SunWarrior vanilla, lecithin and probiotics.1 banana.
Dinner: Cooked vegan soup (celery, onions, carrots, tomatoes, spinach, olive oil, veggie broth, organic kamut pasta, bay leaf). Serving of Italian Zest crackers.
I also always take, even if I don't mention it, 2 capsules of O-Mega-Zen3, one organic, food based multivitamin, and 4,800 IU of vitamin D.
Remember that until Monday 11th, you can get 20% off any order of any size on sirova.com by using the code LIQUIDATION2. Things are going fast and many items are out of order already, and once they're gone, there's no restocking! I am going to spend my time writing eBooks and doing raw food coaching, so there's no time for the store anymore. Happy shopping :-)

Product of the Month: Morning Jing by Rehmannia of Shaman Shack
Joanna Steven - Sat, 03/05/2011 - 09:00
Happy month of March everyone :-) I started a double load of classes last week to try and finish my Masters degree early, and with 3 months old Franklin who does not nap very well as well as packing orders for the liquidation of my online raw food store Sirova, I don't have a lot of time on my hands! But, there is a product on the raw market which many of you have not tried yet, and I absolutely had to write a blog post on it, because I love it!
This product is Shaman Shack. I was first introduced to it by Shawna, a high raw foodist who lives in Alaska. Her whole family uses it, and her 7 year old son loves it and finds it very energizing. Here is what she told me about it:
"Another product he has which is fascinating is the Morning Jing. It is a
protein "powder" made of black beans, black rice, black sesame, maca and he-sho wu. I didn't think much of it as the ingredients (the beans and rice) sounded so ordinary, but it was suprising. We made it with almond milk and strawberries per his recommendation and I cannot explain how fabulous it made us feel! Gabriel went wild for it. When we ran out he kept asking us to order more because it made him so "generized." :) (That's how he said energized then). I can't explain why it worked so well, but it was far better than any other protein powder type product we've ever used. It's funny too because of the rice and beans which we generally don't eat!"
According to Dean Thomas,"Morning Jing is a fantastic tasting super nutritious blend of powdered superfoods and herbs. Designed to get your day started with deep invigoration while replenishing the kidney 'Jing'. Black foods are thought by the Chinese to tonify the Kidney meridian, therby helping restore youth and deep resillience. Black bean, black rice and black sesame provide a complete amino acid profile with important omega oils for body flexibility, cellular respiration and neuro-support. Then we add in a generous amount of Maca (gelatinized) and some Ho Sho Wu, the famed longevity herb from China- called 'old black hair', as it is said to restore pigment (it has for me!). We also add a bit of bee pollen and powdered agave.
Morning Jing is a super-tasty and unique nutritional product, sure to change the landscape of protein powders."I contacted Rehmannia to find out more about the product. Check out his interview! If you have any additional questions, be sure to let him know. He is super helpful and very knowledgeable.
Joanna Steven: Morning Jing is a very unique product for health conscious individuals; can you tell us more about it and its ingredients?
Dr Cousens & RehmanniaDean "Rehmannia" Thomas: Morning Jing is marketed as a "protein powder", but is far more than that. In actuality, we should market it as a youth and rejuvenation product, as the black foods in is comprised of are said by the Chinese to fortify and replenish the kidney meridian, which is where our potential for maintaining youthfulness is concentrated. Americans are losing this "essence" and rapid aging is occuring in many individuals we can observe around us. The Taoist masters call this essence "Jing", I write about it extensively in my book Healing Thresholds. The black bean, black rice and black sesame, as well as the herb Ho Sho Wu are all "black foods" and go to the kidney meridian. I also beleive the shilajit and reishi in the Super Morning Jing are kidney foods. Bee Pollen is definitely a Jing food too, as well as Maca, heck- they're all kidney Jing ingredients!
[Joanna notes: I asked Kate Magic if she took He Sho Wu when she was breastfeeding, and she said that she had not because she didn't know about it then, but had she known about it, she would have taken it for sure. I also know that my friend Courtney, a fellow ecstatic mama, adds it to her drinks and she has been breastfeeding for the past 17 months.]
The special processing of these ingredients increases their digestibility and reduces potential for flatulence. The protein profile is balanced and wholesome as well. The carbohydrates as starches and fats are very beneficial for broad-spectrum health. The starches in particular have been "gelatinized" to make them more digestible, this is important, as I don't believe raw maca is good to take- the Incans never took it raw - always roasted, we should follow the wisdom of the ancients.
David Wolfe and RehmanniaJoanna Steven: My friend Shawna uses it often, and her husband and 7 year old son love it. I personally use it regularly and I am breastfeeding. In your opinion, who would benefit the most from taking Morning Jing, and are there people who should probably avoid it?
Dean "Rehmannia" Thomas: Morning Jing is very beneficial in the raw foodist's diet, as the proteins and starches are rendered into a bio-available state. I believe Morning Jing is good for all people, any time.
Joanna Steven: I have added Morning Jing to many smoothies and shakes, and it always adds a delicious dimension of flavor. Can you share your favorite recipe using Morning Jing with us?
Dean "Rehmannia" Thomas: I like it best strait up in almond milk, but my second fave is simply with strawberries. I do also crazy drinks with persimmon and cacao and berry mixes. Try a little Morning Jing in rice milk blended with an avocado and cacao and honey. Makes a puddingy drink!
So what do you think? I personally couldn't wait to get my own bag of Morning Jing, and I loved it right away -- and so did my husband Matthew! Here are some of our favorite recipes.

Guest Blogger: Tonya Kay - Cold is a Feeling, not a Disease
Joanna Steven - Tue, 03/01/2011 - 09:00
Cold is a feeling - not a disease.
I definitely run at a colder temperature now that I don't put heated foods into my system. And let me tell you, the first few winters of my raw vegan experience were jarringly chilly! I drank ginger tea, I took extra hot baths, I wore winter socks, ate more fats, put on more fat and still felt the Jack Frost shiver all the time. And worst of all; I resisted. It is true that resistance the source of all pain. I mean, there's the cold, then there's the resisting the cold. When I finally got it into my head that this "chill" was a feeling, not a disease, I surrendered, allowed myself to finally really feel what I was experiencing and ... nobody died. Cold is just a feeling.
Still, the most effective combatants I have found for the raw vegan winter shivers are exercise (nothing raises the body temperature like blood flow!), and actual exposure to the elements. I mean, we worship nature as raw vegans, and since winter is not a disease, what harm comes from being one with our climate and getting out in it? Nothing changes your perception of cold like being in it. Every day. Your body adapts and amazingly quickly, you stop resisting and one day, in Chicago in a blizzard, I find myself shoveling my car out of a snow pile - with my jacket unzipped. My ears are uncovered, my hands are exposed and . . . I guess they are cold, but I'm no longer afraid of the cold. In fact, I like it.
And that’s my approach to raw food and health in general. I don’t develop sneaky ways to not feel something that’s uncomfortable in my life. Rather, I rearrange my reality into a new one. One of unshakable health. I am free when I develop a best-friend-forever relationship with the cold weather. I’m always aiming for complete freedom.
Are you tired of being cold eating the raw food diet in winter? Do you give up your health ideals and pack on an extra 10 pounds as the seasons change? Tonya Kay, 8 year raw vegan, offers tips for staying warm and staying on your healthy diet during the cold months in the Winter Warming eBook, the 3rd book in the Raw Nutritional Analysis series. The Winter Warming eBook not only nutritionally analyzes a month on Tonya Kay's winter raw vegan diet, so you can learn how much protein, calcium, carbohydrates and vitamins an actual raw foodist takes in, but also details her athletic workouts and caloric expenditure. This tree-free eBook contains 81 pages of inspirational writings on how to stick to your diet and ideals instead of turning to cooked comfort food this winter. Click here to purchase!
